IVAN ZHOLTOVSKY ABOUT DEVELOPMENT AND RECONSTRUCTION OF MOSCOW: PROJECTS AND IDEAS OF THE 1920s and 1930s

Authors Y. Starostenko , Research Institute of Theory and History of Architecture and Town-Planning (The Branch of CNIIP of the Minstroy of Russia), Moscow, Russia
Abstract The article is based on archival documents, including the transcripts of the meetings in the Committee Mossovet and the Gorkom for architecture and planning of Moscow City – Arplan, in February 1935, and the little-known publications of Ivan Zholtovsky of the 1930's – early 1940's. Analysis of these materials made it possible to present new and clarify earlier known facts related to the work of Ivan Zholtovsky over the "New Moscow" plan, and particularly, information about a possible prototype of this project. The article also examines the project of reconstruction of the Sverdlov square, prepared by Ivan Zholtovsky in 1932–1934, witch contains the author's reflections about the ways of reconstruction of Moscow and about the value of the separate architectural monuments of the city, etc. In the article special attention is devoted to urban planning theory of the architect. The basic theses of this theory, built on the idea of combining statics and dynamics in the space of the city, were recreated by newly identified materials, which allows clarifying and significantly expanding the already existing ideas about urban planning views of Ivan Zholtovsky. A special place in the article is given to information on the role of the architect in the preparation of the General Plan for the Reconstruction of Moscow in 1935.
