Article MAIN TRENDS ÎF RUSSIAN URBAN PLANNING – FROM THE 1990s TO THE 2000s
Authors
D. Fesenko
Arkhitekturnyy Vestnik Magazine, Moscow, Russia
Abstract The 1990s for Russian urban planning became perhaps the most difficult period in its history. The article analyzes the prerequisites for disciplinary progress within the architectural profession, when urban planning, along with landscape architecture and the protection of monuments and restoration, was forced out of professional life. 2000s turn out to be the starting point for the subsequent exit from the historical impasse. The main trends in the urban development sphere of that time are reviewed: the spread of integrated development projects (COT), new urban formations, suburban villages, positioned as a place of permanent residence. The author dwells in detail on urban and social dysfunctions as a consequence of developmental pressures that became apparent by the end of the 2000s: distortion of urban landscapes, transport collapse, leaching of public spaces, building development of green areas, loss of cultural heritage sites.
Keywords: urban planning, interior design, new urban formations, social and urban dysfunctions, the 1990s – 2000s
