Abstract The article deals with the stages of designing the southern part of the Garden Ring of Moscow during its creation according to the General Plan for the Reconstruction of Moscow in 1935 and the development of planning and architectural ideas in the post-war period, up to the change in the direction of Soviet urban planning that occurred in the mid-1950s. The problem field of research was the search for new archival materials that reflect the strategy and tactics of architects and authorities in the field of urban planning. The article shows the relationship between the creativity of architects who develop variants of scenarios for the transformation of the city as a result of the adoption of administrative urban planning decisions by the authorities. Unpublished projects of the Garden Ring, Paveletskaya, Dobryninskaya and Oktyabrskaya squares, carried out under the supervision of A.V. Shchusev, L.M. Polyakov, G.A. Zakharov, G.Ya. Wolfensohn and others – architects, managers of large teams, are introduced into scientific circulation.
