Article TRADITION AND MODERNITY IN THE PLANNING DECISIONS OF RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS OF VELIKY NOVGOROD

Abstract Veliky Novgorod is one of the oldest Russian cities, which history is closely connected with the development of the Russian state. The paper analyzes the formation of the planning structure of the city in different eras, identifies the main features and principles of urban planning and architectural solutions of residential development. With the example of educational projects on the topic “Residential area”, performed by students of the Moscow Institute of Architecture on real situations of Veliky Novgorod, the issues of architectural and artistic composition, the principles of continuity in the formation of new residential quarters in order to preserve and develop the techniques of urban planning and planning organization of the city, achieving organic interaction with the existing context, with ancient monuments and landscape environment to create a comfortable living environment. Much attention is paid to the multifaceted study of the problems of the ancient city, starting with a historical tour with the identification of the main stages of its formation to modern challenges of future development: social, architectural, engineering, transport. The importance of such experimental design, which allows to bring the educational process closer to the real tasks of modern design, is emphasized.
