Article Sacred and technical aspects of the architect's profession in Antiquity. Part IV: Early Byzantine period

Abstract This article examines the sacred and technical aspects of architectural practice in Early Byzantium, the eastern part of the Roman Empire, which retained cultural attributes that allow it to be classified as Late Antiquity until the 7th century. The 7th century marks a turning point in Byzantium when new construction and, consequently, the classical architectural tradition virtually ceased. Early Byzantium is a time of generalization and systematization of the accumulated classical heritage across all spheres of Byzantine society. The artistic expression of this generalization in architecture is the construction of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople in the 6th century. Another aspect characteristic of this era is expressed in the systematization of Roman legislation by Emperor Justinian and in Julian of Ascalon's book "On the Laws and Customs of Palestine," the first known architectural treatise on legal issues, which was later adopted by Russian urban planning legislation in the form of a series of successive editions of the Nomocanon, beginning in the 10th century.
