Article	Artistic and conceptual explorations in the professional practice of architecture

Abstract	The article is devoted to defining the artistic and conceptual activity of an architect and identifying socio-historical factors influencing the emergence and decline of its trends. It examines historical trends and forms of architectural visionary thought ("del disegnamento de legname", "città ideale", architectural fantasy, utopia, capriccio, veduta, "architecture parlante", the modeling practice of three-dimensional "modello", avant-garde, expressionist, and futuristic concepts, virtual and "paper architecture") within the context of V.S. Stepin's periodization: from the pre-classical stage of human development to the post-non-classical. As a result of the research, a definition of the architect's artistic and conceptual activity is provided, relating it to the modeling of imaginary architectural images and worlds using visual and verbal means, and not always focusing on direct implementation in construction. It is established that the development of the architect's artistic and conceptual activity is associated with changes in the scientific worldview, socio-political crises, the transformation of architectural education, the development of visualization and communication technologies, and the interaction of architecture with artistic culture.
