Abstract The article is devoted to the analysis of the planning features of fortified settlements in Yu County, Hebei Province – a unique historical and cultural region that has preserved over 400 fortification structures from the Ming and Qing dynasties (15th-18th centuries). Based on an analysis of historical sources, field survey data, and contemporary theoretical approaches, the spatial organization patterns of these settlements are identified. The geometric characteristics of the layouts, the typology of the street network, gate orientation, and the internal modular structure of residential courtyards are examined. Particular attention is paid to the influence of Yin Geng's treatise “Xiangyue” (1550) on the standardization of planning solutions. It is concluded that the layout of Yu County's settlements represents a synthesis of defensive function, traditional norms of Chinese architecture, and local natural and climatic conditions.
Keywords: Yu County, fortified settlements, planning structure, defensive architecture, “Xiangyue” treatise
