Article CIRCLE AND SQUARE AS THE BASIS OF GEOMETRIC CONSTRUCTION OF PLANS OF CENTRIC BUILDINGS IN CHINESE ARCHITECTURE
Authors M. Shevchenko
Moscow Institute of Architecture (State Academy), Moscow, Russia
Abstract The article examines planning structures of centric buildings in Chinese architecture, and relationship between the identified geometric constructions and worldview concepts of ancient China. It was revealed that the basis of the geometric constructions of most centric buildings, regardless of their functional purpose and size, was the relation of inscribed circles and squares, which formed a grid of planning axes. The circle embodied the idea of the yin element, the square – about the yang element. That is, the identified geometric constructions of building plans were based on the dualistic worldview of traditional China. This may be one of the explanations for the stability of such planning compositions and their low variability over time. This also reveals one of the aspects of the successive nature of the development of Chinese architecture.
