Article	DISCUSSION OF THE ARCHITECTURAL AND SPATIAL ORGANIZATION OF RESIDENTIAL QUARTERS IN THE USSR IN THE MID-1930s

Abstract	The article is devoted to the discussion about the architectural and spatial organization of residential quarters, which was conducted by Soviet architects on the pages of professional periodicals in the mid-1930s, and which has never been the object of special research before. The materials of the article show that the transition to the perimeter construction of residential blocks in the framework of the formation of the concept of “city-ensemble” in the early 1930s, which is often considered as an unconditional statement of new principles in Soviet architecture, was not so clearly perceived by experts. Special attention is paid to the role played by the requirements for the placement of municipal and social service enterprises in the residential quarter, as well as the requirements of a sanitary and hygienic nature, which were discussed in 1936 at a conference organized by the Research Institute of Municipal Sanitation and Hygiene.
