Abstract Urban public space is a place where social life is concentrated. The urban environment should be attractive and comfortable. It is very important. In this article, scientific ideas about the optimal parameters of spaces, the features of their perception, patterns of behavior that could be the basis for a strategy for the reconstruction of historically developed public spaces, especially squares, are generalized and systematized. The formation of techniques that must be taken into account at the design stage so that public space meets the needs of society is the main thing in this article. The materials of this work will be useful for both: understanding the nature of the demand for a particular urban environment, and in practical activities - to create an attractive space guaranteed even at the design stage.
