Abstract Current social situation requires architectural skills to create a quality learning environment for children with a mental retardation. The paper presents a study of architectural and planning solutions of the first buildings of educational institutions for such children. The conclusion is made about the relationship between the psychology of pupils and the architecture of school buildings and the quality of surrounding areas improvement.
