Abstract The article discusses an integrated approach to the studying of the architectural environment, based on the graphic-analytical method of studying the existing urban development. The works are performed by students of the 2nd grade of the Faculty of Architecture MGAHI named after V.I.Surikov in the period of summer educational practice. The approach includes several successive stages of work: the selection and study of the site; study of individual architectural objects and architectural complexes in the urban environment; polychrome analysis of individual objects and architectural complexes. The method involves the synthesis of numerous skills acquired by students during the study of various disciplines in the 1st and 2nd grades. The educational practice is a good basis for mastering in the process of further education the skill of pre-project analysis - one of the basic stages of the professional activity of an architect.
