Article KOSTROMA – FORMATION OF TOWN-PLANNING IDENTITY:
CITY AND RIVERS, HISTORY AND CONTEMPORANEITY

Abstract The article is devoted to some issues of town-planning development of the historical city of Kostroma in the aspect of complex modern development and partial re-functionalization of riverine areas of the Volga and the Kostroma rivers. The main points on which the authors focus are: preservation of the historical and town-planning heritage and of the cultural potential of the city included in the Golden Ring of Russia, outlining strategies of the development of the city as of a potential science-intensive and educational center, active transformation of riverine areas in order to increase their public and recreational potential, as well as enhancing the tourist appeal of the oldest historical areas of the city. The key idea of all town-planning transformations is formation of the town-planning and socio-cultural identity of one of the ancient Russian cities.
