Abstract

The article discusses a unique phenomenon in the decorative art of the Russian North painting of chests. The object of analysis was the number of them in Veliky Ustyug and Kholmogory in the XVII century. In consideration of the chests, the author focuses on the study paired images in the historical context of their evolution. Such approach gives the opportunity to clear up the level of influence, first, of the city art on the provincial culture and, second, the interest of elite of society for foreign culture particularly Persian one.
