Abstract |
It is well known that Absheron peninsula is rich in oil and gas resources. That’s why the burning fires were constantly coming out from the earth's surface since ancient times up to now. Such a feature of that land has led to the emergence of the fire-worship religion and late of Zoroastrianism in Azerbaijan in the ancient times. One can mentions the fire temples preserved to our day as an evidenced of that fact. One of the most interesting monuments of this type is the temple of fire "Ateshgyah" on the southeastern outskirts of the village Surakhany (the word "Ateshgyah "means"house of fire", "place of fire"). Temple "Ateshgyah" is one of the biggest attractions of Zoroastrian culture, and therefore was entered in the Code of historical and cultural monuments protected by the State as a monument of world significance. The article deals with the historical aspects of the formation of the complex, as well as study of the recently carried out restoration works.
