Abstract The beginning of the 20th century was marked by social and industrial changes, changes in the material and spiritual needs of society, which led to the emergence of new creative trends. Two schools: the German BAUHAUZ and the Soviet VKHUTEMAS simultaneously, but with different starting ideologies, were searching for NEW in the formation of design and architecture. Despite the identity of the principles and the search for creative development of both directions, it was the initial motivation of the two schools that gave many different and fundamentally important answers to further development in the theory and practice of design and architecture. The theoretical foundations of the architectural space were developed based on the search for new social objects and the shaping of public spaces.
Keywords: BAUHAUZ, VKHUTEMAS, «machine revolution», social utopias, search for a NEW, creative concepts of shaping, construction, design and architecture, theory of architectural space
