Abstract The article discusses the current problems of the urban environment of small historical cities of Russia. A review is made on modern urban planning models and various types of analysis, such as: spacematrix (various types of urban networks), spacesyntax (connectivity of the road network), MIT (functional diversity model). The results of these various tools of spatial analysis can be compared with each other and with other data of urban planning analysis of the territory of settlements such as landscape-visual analysis, analysis of social connectivity and walking distance, which are the most advanced in the Russian architectural school.
Keywords: small towns, urban development model, urban environment, urban planning and design, cognitive urbanism
