Article PROJECT PROPOSALS FOR THE RED SQUARE RECONSTRUCTION IN THE 1930s – 1960s IN THE CONTEXT OF THE 1971’s MOSCOW MASTER PLAN DEVELOPMENT
Authors S. Tkachenko
Moscow Institute of Architecture (State Academy), Moscow, Russia
Abstract The article is devoted to the stages of the emergence of architectural and planning proposals for the reconstruction of the Red Square of Moscow – from competitions on the House of People's Commissariat of Heavy Industry 1934 and 1936 to the General Plan 1971, and the impact of this wave process on the evolution of the central part of the capital. The problematic field of research is the scientific assessment of unrealized projects to expand Red Square in 1945-1954 with the demolition of public buildings of Kitay-city and proposals for the development of the south-western planning axis of the USSR capital. The illustrative part of the article includes author's models-reconstruction of a number of design solutions. The study is based on publications in professional publications of different years, graphic materials and written sources stored in public and private archives.
