ArticleSOVIET POLITICAL LEADERSHIP AND THE GENERAL PLAN FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF MOSCOW (1931 – early 1950s)
Authors S. Kuznetsov, Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of Moscow, Moscow, Russia
Abstract There is no doubt that, during the 1930s, architecture, like other spheres of culture literature, music, theater, cinema, and so on was subjected to strict ideological control by the political regime. Some researchers go so far as to argue that the transition from the avant-garde to the "Stalinist style" in Soviet architecture was initiated largely by the personal intervention of the leader of the USSR I.V. Stalin. It is believed that he used the 1935 Moscow General Plan as the decisive tool of this “style breaking”. However, this myth is not supported by archival sources. The goal of the General Plan for the reconstruction of Moscow was not to create a new grandiose architectural style, but to bring about a radical modernization of the city infrastructure. Stalin's interest in the architectural process was not profound. It was clearly cyclical in nature and focused on ideologically most important points of the architectural agenda of the city.
