ADAM HEINRICH, YEVPATORIA’S FIRST ARCHITECT

Authors

V. Strunina, Sevastopol State University, Sevastopol, Russia

Abstract The paper unveils a consolidated inventory of architectural designs and projects, implemented by Yevpatoria’s first city architect Adam Heinrich, a graduate of St. Petersburg Civil Engineers Institute. Previously unpublished materials from Russian archives are now presented to the academic community providing insights into the career and achievements of the outstanding architect, whose legacy includes architectural monuments currently listed as ‘items of historical and cultural heritage’ which necessitates careful attitude, protection and restoration. Adam Heinrich authored the then innovative general development plan for the city of Yevpatoria, implemented after 1895. His unique architectural style, incorporating Art Nouveau features, drastically transformed a modest sea-side settlement into a glamorous Black Sea resort at the beginning of the 20th century. The 25-year service by Adam Heinrich as the city architect was only interrupted in 1919 by the Bolshevik Revolution.
