This article analyses the main issues associated with open areas within the curtilages of multi-storey residential buildings built between 1970 and 1990 using an example from Simferopol (Republic of Crimea). It identifies solutions for the redesign of these areas drawing both on examples found internationally and on an analysis of the existing research base.  It provides recommendations for the reconstruction, improvement and maintenance of these areas that may be put into practice. Particular attention is paid to the funding of reconstruction and improvements, as well as ongoing maintenance of the reconstructed areas.
