In the article was deal the historical development of settlements of the Crimean peninsula and identifies the historical and town-planning prerequisites for the formation of the Kerch-Taman transport and communication hub as a promising development of the coastal areas of the Kerch Strait in connection with the construction of a transport crossing. The main task of the historical research is to identify prerequisites for the formation this hub through the definition of the nature of the development of the coastal areas of the Kerch Strait in separate historical periods. For this purpose, the course of the region's development has been analyzed - the main directions of economic activity and the political forces. Based on the results of the study, taking into account the current trends: the conjuncture of the business and cultural life of the region, geopolitical processes, proposals for the future development of the coastal areas of the Kerch Strait will be formulated.
