ArticlePUBLIC SPACES DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES IN GERMAN CITIES

Abstract

The problems of creating an attractive and an actively functioning public spaces are investigated as the case of urban planning programs in German cities. The principle of analysis is based on the identification of modern processes in society and related functional changes that occur on public spaces of the city.  Open public spaces, most actively developing in the cities of Germany, are divided into five types: public spaces main transport hubs; democratic spaces for any social processes; administrative-ideological spaces; market places and linear public spaces. In the article, individual types undergoing the most extensive renovation are analyzed. As a result, the common tendencies of development to the all types of public spaces and the particular qualities of each space are identified.
