SUBURBANIZATION SETTLEMENT PATTERN OPTIMIZATION: THE SUBURBAN COMPLEX RE-HABILITATION METHODOLOGY

Authors D. Khomyakov, Moscow Institute of Architecture (State Academy), Moscow, Russia
Abstract

The article expounds the basic contradictions of suburbanization’s model of urban growth and settlement, which are considered the preconditions for the necessity of creating a comprehensive methodology for the rehabilitation and structuring of the suburban complex. The author describes the structure of his particular proposed methodology, which is organized by the four "links": spatial scales (levels) of the work, special-purpose strategic directions, objects (spheres) of the methodology's impact and the instruments for its realization. The article exposes the methodology’s content, listing the necessary steps and describing the means of regulation of urban planning practices in residential suburbs. The article concludes by indicating the ways in which the suburban settlements must evolve hereafter.

Keywords: suburbanization, methodology, public space, mobility, productivity, community, suburban settlement
