Article ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN DURING THE FRENCH ENLIGHTENMENT: FROM THE PAGE TO THE BUILDING
Authors T. Kopteva, Moscow Institute of Architecture (State Academy), Moscow, Russia
Abstract The author analyzes the relation between the theory of architecture and architectural design during the French Enlightenment. In this article the researcher analyzes the ideas about designing and building which could be termed “a conceptual house” or “a house as it exists in imaginative perception”. It is not a generalization of an existing building, but rather a different construct which may omit many parts of the building’s program. A conceptual house is a blend of theoretical and mundane; it relies on the hierarchy of rooms’ roles; it is ruled by the logic of description and story rather than engineering, etc. The article focuses in most detail on the work of Le Camus de Mézières Le génie de l'architecture, ou L'analogie de cet art avec nos sensations (The Genius of Architecture or The analogy of that art with our sensations) , and uses also other projects and works of the Enlightenment’s architects, such as Étienne-Louis Boullée, Claude Nicolas Ledoux, and Marie-Joseph Peyre.
Keywords: France, 18th century, architecture of the French Enlightenment, Nicolas Le Camus de Mézières
