Article THE CLIMATIC BACKGROUND OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN AND SUMERIAN TOWN-PLANNING

Abstract Paleoclimatic information, accumulated in the last decade, suggests abrupt climate variations in the Northern Hemisphere in the period of the first high cultures origination. The article presents a retrospective analysis of the impact of climate changes in the middle and late Holocene on the development of town-planning of ancient Egyptian and Sumerian cultures. On their example close relationship of urban development with climatic conditions can be revealed. The reasons of the rise, well-being and fall of major cities of these civilizations, as well as planning and development features related to climatic factors are discussed.
