Abstract | The article discusses appearance and evolution of term “Ecopolis”, and compares the differences between “city”, “sustainable city”, “ecocity” and “Ecopolis” which defines the core of Ecopolis’s idea. The article presents the Four Ecological Phases of Human Existence (according to Boyden), the emergence of a fifth phase in the modern period, and their components and connection with the modern understanding of a city as an ecosystem. It proves that cities are not only a collection of buildings but also of processes and requires new approaches to urban design in the changing context. | ||||
