Article SOCIAL AND SPATIAL ASPECTS OF PLANNING PUBLIC CENTERS OF THE LARGE TOWN (LEARNING FROM SEGREGATION AND INTEGRATION PROBLEMS)
Authors L.A. Shirokova, Moscow Institute of Architecture (State academy), Moscow, Russia
Abstract We want our cities and towns to become more lively. To do it, an architect has to imagine how people are using the space. He is to design, based on a scenario approach. We have to imagine how people will behave themselves within these places – we need to have the tools modeling the development of the space and, according to it, to correct the spatial environment.

What are the spatial parameters which we will change in this case? – They are: size, boundaries, orientation, saturation, small architectural forms and, of course, people.

In this paper, we introduce two alternative concepts - separation (segregation) and association (integration) as well as various approaches to the study of city public spaces. Only then we make the conclusion on the further development of studies of social spaces taking into account the social control.
