Article THE ARCHITECTURE OF HISTORIC STREETS ON CITY PLANS AND MAPS
Authors P. Goldin, Stroytechproject, Moscow, Russia
Abstract Achievements and drawbacks of the electronic navigation are examined in comparison to historic guidebooks and city maps. Ways of visualizing cartography information in navigation systems are far from perfect nowadays, nevertheless, cartography has developed various methods of representing cities on maps. According to the theory of modern hermeneutics, any information is the text that is expected to be understood and interpreted.

City map is a special text, which should be adapted for its reader. Using traditional cartographic methods such as perspective views of buildings and line of facades can help us understand maps. The prognosis of city cartography development: the production of high quality paper guidebooks; the synthesis of paper and electronic forms; the development of new types of devices; the adaptation of device interface for people.
