Abstract |
Given article is devoted to emerging role of international airports as new urban cores and to their influence on global competition and cooperation among largest cities. Authors stress the status of “hub” – key node of international flights network - as a most important factor necessary for creating “aerotropolis”, an international commercial zone around an airfield which is converting airport from rather isolated structure into new urban locality.
The article is based on findings of two state grants: study of problems of Moscow metropolitan area development, financed by Ministry of Education and Science of Russian Federation, and research on airport influence over urban development funded by Russian Fund for Basic Research. On the grounds of the studies authors suggest a model for restructuring of suburban belt of Russian capital fueled by urbanization potential around international airports. |
