Abstract The article examines the role of interpersonal and semiotic communication in the aspect of cultural evolution. The ability to engage citizens and activate the process of cultural communication is regarded as the main task of the cultural center. In the structure of the cultural center, mediative and communicative spaces (halls, atriums, corridors, galleries) are distinguished as having the greatest potential for socialization. The cultural center is conceived as a fractal of the city, and the genesis of the above-mentioned spaces can be traced in the translation into the building boundaries of such urban structural elements as streets, squares and parks. The analysis of modern projects of this typology is carried out. Based on the properties of socializing spaces and their openness to the external environment, a consistent classification is built. The interrelations and regularities of urban planning traditions, cultural and historical heritage, and urban planning context that influence the structure of cultural centers and the configuration of communicative spaces are revealed.
Keywords: culture center, mediative-communicative spaces, spatial boundary, street, square, park
