Authors G. Gafarova
Scientific-Research Project Institute «Azerberpa», Baku, Azerbaijan
Abstract Caravanserais are divided into three 3 groups: 1 – caravanserais (built on intercity caravan routes), 2 – urban caravanserais (these caravanserais were usually used for commercial purposes) and 3 – caravanserais on bridges (these were built on the right and left sides of large bridges on caravan roads). Examples of 1 group caravanserais are «Miajik», «Sangachal» and «Garghabazar». In contrast to 1 group caravanserais, the urban type was intended for trade and consisted of two floors and more. 2 group of caravanserais includes the caravanserai of Shah Abbas in Ganja and in the old fortress of Baku. Caravanserais on bridges were intended for merchants to spend the night after a long journey. Compared to the others, these caravanserais were smaller. Examples of such caravanserais are ones on the right and left coasts of the «Girmisi korpu » ( Red Bridge) built on Khram tea in the 12th century in Gazakh district.
Keywords: Caravanserai, caravan tracks, water storage - waterbody, two lancet arch, girth arch, Balakhana (room above the entrance)
