Abstract The topic of construction of social cities in Central Asia is highlighted. Representatives of the main creative organizations - the Association of Urban Architects (ARU), the All-Union Association of Proletarian Architects (VOPRA) and the Association of Contemporary Architects (OSA), attended the design competition. Their projects are known, but so far no documents have been published that allow to identify the goals, reasons and circumstances of the development of social city projects in Central Asia. The author revealed the documents for the preparation of the competition project for the Chardjuy, the Turkmen SSR of 1930: the competition program and an explanatory note to it (GARF). Based on the minutes of the meetings, the chronology of the formation of the topic, the composition of the jury and the list of participants who took part in organizing the assignment for the planning competition for the city of New Chardzhui were built.
