Abstract During establishing of history of architecture as an academic discipline in China in the beginning of 20th century, traditional Chinese architecture was divided into two main branches: normative and vernacular architecture. Classification of architectural objects by functional criteria, widespread at that time in European science, without taking into account their belonging to the category of normative or vernacular architecture did not allow to fully explain the features of structure and forms of buildings. Normative architecture has been described in classical treatises on construction, which compilation was associated with the need to exercise control over construction by the imperial administration. Requirement for normative architecture to comply with official standards has led to a relative uniformity in the shape of such structures throughout China, regardless of the remoteness of the area from the capitals. That is why normative architecture can be studied as a whole throughout its entire existence. Vernacular architecture did not obey uniform norms, it is inherent in an incredible variety, significantly exceeding the variety of normative architecture. When studying it, it is necessary to catalog and systematize the actual material in order to make it possible to conduct narrowly focused research as a basis for further generalization.
