Abstract	The article reveals the historical patterns of urban development taking into account the influence of transport networks as an organizing force. A brief description of the specifics of the operation of transport networks from antiquity to the twentieth century is given. The historical stages of a critical rethinking of the role of the transport network in the life of cities are considered.
