Article THE WORLD HERITAGE SITE "CULTURAL LADSCAPE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT” (THE GREAT BRITAIN). TO THE HISTORY OF ITS CREATION AND MANAGEMENT
Authors V.A. Tsvetnov, Administration for State Protection of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Moscow. Russia
Abstract Protection of cultural landscapes, or cultural heritage in its historical and natural environment, is a world trend, which the UNESCO World Heritage Center strongly supports. One of the classic examples of protecting a cultural landscape is the Lake District in Britain, a project that started in the mid-1800s. This article gives a brief overview of the history and management of the Lake District National Park. The author then proposes a hypothetical project of a historical and cultural preserve centered around the Petroglyphs of Onega Lake, which has a typology of cultural and natural resources similar to the British Lake District. Based on this example, the author makes conclusion that the British experience provides a model that can be usefully adapted to similar sites in Russian Federation.
