Article	ARCHITECTURE OF THE XXth–XXIst CENTURIES AND THE ART OF PICTORIAL ABSTRACTION

Abstract	The beginning of the XXth century is marked by the aspiration to transition from figurative to abstract beginning in plastic arts, which is expressed in a set of radical manifestos. If figurative art offers the viewer the illusion of perceived reality, then abstract art relies in creating an image not so much on the appearance of an object, but on its semantic content and related associations. The formal language of abstract art – painting, sculpture, installation – was transferred to architecture. Comparison of abstract works of painting and architectural creations of the XXth – early XXIst centuries, representing different stylistic trends from Art Nouveau and Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism and Futurism, then Suprematism, Neoplasticism and Constructivism, as well as Organics, Purism, Op-Art, Surrealism, Neo-Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and Minimalism shows that the movement towards abstraction was the dominant trend, allowing the interaction of individual types of plastic arts and architecture. The artistic experience of painting is now being replaced by new technologies with new ideas for the development of plastic arts and architecture.
