Article MEZZO-SPACES OF IN BUILT ENVIRONMENT
Authors A. Krasheninnikov, Moscow Institute of Architecture (State Academy), Moscow, Russia
Abstract This article continues a series of publications on Cognitive Urbanism. The research aimed at studying of relationship between human behavior and the structure of built environment. We must go beyond space-making to the making of places. The cognitive approach naturally leads us to the idea of the cultural landscape and the study of the traditions and rituals of everyday life. The essence of the study relates to the so-called "environmental behavior" that is all types of social activity and interactions with built environment. According to O. Newman, social control is differentiated by subject: – the personal/public; and by intensity or duration: permanent/temporal. The design method is seen as segmentation of urban landscape into places, define main scenarios and actors, provide comfort and convenience, offer meaning and significance. This article introduces mezzo-spaces – a portion of built environment that is seems as an immediate action place. The proposed stratification of public space of the city is based on the concept of social control as a ground for classification of places. Types of mezzospaces are compared by "social control», «themes», «scenariouses" and "temperaments”. Spatial patterns of Mezzo-spaces provide a conceptual framework of recommendations on urban planning and design of public spaces. The reported study was partially supported by RFBR, research project No. 13-00-00001 a.
