Article SOCIO-CULTURAL PROGRAM OF CULTURAL CENTERS IN CONTEMPORARY CITY
Authors R.S. Kovenski, Moscow Institute of Architecture (State Academy), Moscow, Russia
Abstract Development of Cultural centers is a crucial issue of modern Russia. Our aim is to rethink their role for the contemporary society, and introduce them as it harmonic addition of urban environment. The article analyzes international experience and theoretical concepts of the XX century, dedicated to community and its centers, including the ideas of the “Settlement”, “Social school”, “Local community Center” and “Garden City”. Basing on the research materials, the author proposes a new program for the Cultural Center that considers social, cultural and unique features of the territory and local community. This approach will have a positive influence on the development of the urban conditions of the community, and therefore, on all spheres of human life. The center will be an effective tool in creating local community. It will become an “artifact”, reflecting and embracing features of the community life and its area. It will be a catalyst, producing economic and cultural influence to the surroundings. Connected with public green zones, it could improve ecological environment of the city. In connection with public green zones the Cultural Centers could improve the ecological environment, promote and implement concepts of sustainability.
